Healthy Bathroom Habits
It may seem like common sense, but healthy bathroom habits can help you get relief from your hemorrhoids. Chronic constipation can cause pressure in the anal or rectal veins which can lead to hemorrhoids.
Constipation affects millions of men and women. What's more, the straining from constipation is one of the causes of hemorrhoid flare-ups. Hardened stool pulls at the tissues in the anal canal. Once these tissues are damaged, the veins can bulge out and fall down into the anal canal and form a hemorrhoid. In the case of existing hemorrhoids, passing hardened stool makes the condition worse and prevents healing. So how can you reduce your risk of constipation? Drink plenty of water, follow a balanced, high-fiber diet, exercise and go to the bathroom as soon as you have the urge.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Go as soon as you have the urge
If you are having a flare-up, you may want to resist the urge to use the bathroom because it hurts. However, it's important to go as soon as you feel the urge. Holding it in may contribute to chronic constipation.
Set aside time to use the bathroom
To avoid constipation, train your body to have regular bowel movements by using the bathroom at the same time each day—preferably when you have time for an undisturbed visit.
Keep the area clean
Keeping the anal and rectal area clean prevents irritation. Use PREPARATION H Medicated Wipes daily for a gentle clean.
Straining puts additional pressure on your rectum, which can cause hemorrhoids. When you use the bathroom, try not to strain, push down or hold your breath.
Don't sit for long periods of time
Don't sit on the toilet for more than five minutes at a time. The pressure on your rectum can cause hemorrhoids or make existing hemorrhoids worse. If nothing happens, get up, walk around and relax before trying again.
Don't use dry toilet paper if it is irritating
If dry toilet paper irritates sensitive skin, after a bowel movement use moistened wipes, like PREPARATION H Medicated Wipes for gentle, everyday cleansing to reduce irritation. They can be used every day.
