Apply ointment to the affected area up to 4 times daily, especially at night, in the morning or after each bowel movement. For Intrarectal Use: Before applying, remove protective cover from applicator. Attach applicator to tube. Lubricate applicator well, then gently insert applicator into the rectum. Thoroughly cleanse applicator after each use and replace protective cover. Also apply ointment to external area. Children under 12 years: Ask a doctor.
The instructions indicate that the applicator should be cleaned after every use. We have found that the applicator can be cleaned most successfully by washing it with rubbing alcohol, followed by a thorough rinse with plain water. Be sure to rinse well with water, as the alcohol might cause a stinging or irritating sensation if it comes in contact with delicate rectal tissue.

Preparation H® Cream with Maximum Strength Pain Relief is to be applied externally or in the lower portion of the anal canal only. Apply to the affected area up to four times daily, especially at night, in the morning, or after each bowel movement. Children under 12 years: Ask a doctor.
A dispensing cap is enclosed in each package to control dispersion of the cream to the lower portion of the anal canal. Before applying cream, remove the protective cover from the dispensing cap, then attach the cap to the tube. Lubricate the dispensing cap, then gently insert it partway into the anus. Thoroughly cleanse the cap after each use and replace the protective cover.

Use Preparation H® Medicated Wipes to cleanse the affected area by wiping, patting, or blotting up to 6 times per day or after each bowel movement. Preparation H® Medicated Wipes can be used before applying topical hemorrhoidal treatments such as Preparation H® Cream with Maximum Strength Pain Relief.
Preparation H® Medicated Wipes can also be used for vaginal care and as a moist compress:
- For vaginal care - cleanse the area by gently wiping, patting or blotting. Repeat as needed.
- For use as a moist compress - if necessary, first cleanse the area as previously described. Fold wipe to desired size and place in contact with tissue for a soothing and cooling effect. Leave in place for up to 15 minutes and repeat as needed.
